As the commentators to
this article point out, statistics displaying Vietnam War Veterans as suicide-prone individuals were found to be not only exaggerated and contorted, but wholly false in some cases. So let's hope these figures about modern war returnees are further propaganda from the American left. If not however, maybe it's due in part to the desensitization toward death as a result of first-hand experience of its consequences. In the words of Beckett: "the gravedigger lingeringly puts on the forceps"; yet I'm always saddened when people foreshorten their blink of eternity. Though, as I mentioned before -
it could be worse, they could be Japanese.
